The Owen Hardy

By Rick Thomas

This design for an airship/steam engine is taken from the Clockwork Angels poster created by Hugh Syme, an artist well known for his work with the band Rush. It is based on the steam punk novel Clockwork Angels, about the future as envisaged from the era of steam. The novel was written by Kevin J Anderson, and percussionist Neil Peart from Rush.

In the novel the hero Owen Hardy makes his escape from the clutches of the Watchmaker and the Anarchist. The machines in this world are powered by alchemical energy called "cold fire".

The model is based on a scale of 1cm = 6', using a best guess from the poster of the height of a figure on the deck to be 6 feet. The model measures 21cm length, 16cm height and 12cm in breadth. It is entirely scratch built using metal, wood, plastic and duct tape. There is an built-in battery which powers an old LED from a defunct solar light which changes colour.
