Ares from Stephen Baxter's Voyage

By Ronald Purviance

The alternate history novel, Voyage, by Stephen Baxter takes place in an alternate reality that deviates from our own   in the President Kennedy did not die in the assassination attempt in Dallas, 1963.   He was instead, widowed and severally injured, ending his presidency.   As a result, he was alive to witness the Apollo 11 landing as a guest of President Nixon and in the Oval Office as he called the astronauts on the moon.   He challenged America to go on to Mars, and after a lot of debate, politics and tragedy, we left Earth on March 21, 1985 from the Jacqueline B. Kennedy Space Center, Florida.

This project was designed to commemorate the "30 Anniversary" of the mission this year.   Models of the Saturn VB and Ares were built and photographed and the photo manipulated into Apollo-era NASA photos as if they were taken in this timeline.

The models were built with Airfix and Monogram Saturn Vs and Revell Space Shuttle SRBs on the Saturn VB.   All of the parts are interchangeable to depict every aspect of the flight from launch to Earth return.   The project was chronicled on a thread on NASASpaceflight.com.   It is still an ongoing project and as the flight anniversary dates pass, new photos will be posted.
