She Dragon

By Paul Webb

Here are some photos of my latest model.  It's a 'She Dragon' sculpted by Bob Naismith of MDC Figures based in England.  I bought it a few years ago and have only just gotten to round to assembling and painting it.

As the photos show the model comes in six pieces which, after cleaning up, went together very easily - though with the usual gaps to fill between pieces.  I use my tried and trusted method of plasticine for gap filling as it's very quick and easy (and lazy) and requires no sanding afterwards.  I fill the holes with plasticine using some sculpting tools. Then, when it matches the contours of the rest of the model, I apply a very thin layer of superglue to seal it.  This method only really works on model clothing, rocks or skin; it's no good for a pristine shiny car, spacecraft, etc.  I usually use a very contrasting colour of plasticine (pink in this case) so it's easy to see how it looks and spot any excess that needs removing.

The model was painted in sections, the first of which was the inside of the dragon's mouth before the head was assembled.  The head pieces and the two wings were also reinforced with wire nails inserted into holes drilled for extra support.  All painting was done with acrylics and all with a brush. . . after 35+ years of model making I still can't master airbrushing.  The only exception to acrylics was the inside of the mouth and the eyes which had a few coats of clear enamel varnish to make them glisten.

My dear wife is an avid dragon collector and this was an ideal piece to make for her, but decent sized dragon models (this one stands 14"/ 356mm¯ high) are very few and far between.
