USS Yorktown

By Paul Taylor

This is my kit bash model of the USS Yorktown from the next generation era, I built this model using the AMT ERTL 1/537 Enterprise kit and is 22" long, fully lit using LEDs and has a custom made base that the model is detachable from. As you can see from the photos, it has been extensively modified with updated, bigger, more impressive impulse engines, the warp engines now have the blue grills on each side, and the front parts are now red which I used from a red bendable plastic ruler.

There are also emergency escape life pods added to the hull surfaces which I made in Photoshop and then printed onto photo paper so that they would be raised from the hull surface slightly. The arboretum has been moved one deck up and is also lit up and I chose a green look instead of blue. The docking ports are brass photo etch parts. The VIP lounge at the back of the bridge is also lit and is fitted with a long table and chairs which I crafted myself. The bridge dome has been surgically cut sanded down and re-glued, and the dark grey vertical lines on the neck section are hook-up wire/cable from an old PC.

I wanted to base this model around the time of the Enterprise-C or perhaps just before, so I wanted it to resemble the Ambassador class like the thicker neck section the emergency escape life pods and the colour scheme, plus the warp engines.

I used custom decals plus DLM parts: main blue deflector dish and blue impulse engine crystal, and my bother cast me the clear blue warp engine grills in resin (thank you).

Fitted inside the base, which is from an old 1/18 die cast car, is a circuit board to make the navigation lights flash/blink. The model is powered by a single 9v battery fitted in the underside of the base. There are two on/off rocker switches on the rear of the base, one for the main lighting and one for the navigation lights.

This model took me about 3 months to complete and was very enjoyable.
