UFO Mystery Ship

By Jon Osborn

I saw this kit a few years and always thought it was interesting. Then I found this kit at a local store on sale so I could not resist it any more.

The build was pretty simple. I had planned on just doing some test fits large assembly, when I had noticed just a few pieces more and it would be done. There are just a few parts so the build only took about an hour and a half. Since I was not painting the kit I could not fill the seam lines, but they were not too bad. I figure I would put extra weathering there make it look like some sort of damage. I then did the panel lining and decals like normal.

I really liked the idea of a glow in the dark ship but I liked the look of the painted ship on the box. I had to figure out how to keep the glow in the dark aspect but make it look decent in normal light. I knew paint would block the glow so I had to figure out how to paint it without paint. Then I had the idea of clear coating it in a flat, so it would act as the primer. The flat coat really helped the plastic look of the model and dulled it so the plastic took on a darker look. I then just started painting it with Tamiya Weathering Master sets. The applicators worked but it was hard give it a broad cover, so I just had to keep working to smooth it out. I used a paper towels to fade the weathering and make sure there was weathering all over. Once I was done I clear coated the model with flat again to seal it.

The whole project only took about 5-6 hours of work time and was completed in about 4 days.
