U.S.S. Carl Sagan

By John Moscato

In 1994 astrophysicist Miguel Alcubierre proposed a method for faster than light travel that did not violate general relativity. The scientific 'consensus' was that he was nut. But in 2014 Sonny White at NASA found that we just didn't have the computing power in '94 to work the equations, and it probably is possible the ride a warp "bubble" to interstellar destinations...

Most concepts are in the 100+ year away range. But what if everything comes together sooner, like the Lockheed-Martin small fusion reactors, Electromagnet drive, and the Alcubierre "Wave Drive"? That's where the Sagan is - 30 years from now.

Sagan is made of modules based from the International Space Station US and ESA segments. It has 10 "Harmony" modules in a habitat ring capable od 0.5 g She sports 2 MMEV's (Multi Mission Service and Excursion Vehicle), two advanced Orion capsules with stretched service modules, and 4 Orbital Cygnus supply craft It can accommodate a crew of 4 for up to 2 years and can reach the Gliese-581 system in under five months. she is 78 meters long and 30 meters wide across the warp rings.

Sagan is constructed from Evergreen and JTT sheet plastic, with preformed railroad trusses for supports. There is a 1/2" dowel running down her centerline for stability. She's in 144th scale.
