Papercraft Saturn 1B & Atlas |

Here are a couple of cardmodels in 1/288th scale, a Saturn 1B and an Atlas 2AS. Both were workhorses of the American space program. The models are offered by a designer named Bruno Vanhecke, who offers a number of launch vehicles, as well as several hundred airplanes, all in 1/300th scale. I resized the models to 1/288th, half the size of 1/144th, a traditional scale for launch vehicles. Bruno's models are fairly bare-bones, so I added detail to each model. The Saturn 1B features a scratchbuilt Launch Escape System tower and RCS quads on the Apollo CM, all done in paper. I also added various systems tunnels, antennas and other bits. In all, I count 166 additional scratchbuilt pieces added to the model. I built SA-205, the launch vehicle for the first manned mission to Skylab. I used a metallic paper for the main body of the Atlas 2AS, and also added scratchbuilt detail throughout, including the plumbing.
