Self Destruct Enterprise from STIII

By Alex Sandstrom

I know that others have completed this model before, however I wanted to share my take on the damage inflicted by Khan and the self-destruct.

The base model is the AMT/ERTL 1/537 Refit from Star Trek VI. I wasn't too hung up on the accuracy of the model in terms of Enterprise vs Enterprise A, but I did modify the decals to eliminate the -A so it could pass for the version from Star Trek III.

The saucer section is a resin kit purchased online many years ago. I don't remember where it came from, but I have seen others on this site use it so I am sure it is not too hard to find. It came with some "battle" decals which I promptly discarded as I thought they looked fake.

I started with an assembly of the secondary hull with plans to paint in colors that I find provide a nice balance between the studio model colors and the colors seen on screen. I used Model Master Gloss Gull Grey FS 16440 and Aircraft Grey FS 16473 to generate the grey and blue shades, giving a distinction between the two without the blue looking too blue as to be distracting.

Before the model was even primed, I inflicted damage to the secondary hull by using a soldering iron and "impacting" on the damage areas. This provided a nice deformation of the plastic and also allowed me to generate the scars on the port side caused by Khan.

The completed model was covered in gloss coat to give it the original beauty, before layers of dull coat and flat black were applied from the front towards the back. This not only generated the burnt look, but dulled most of the model while leaving surfaces such as the underside of the shuttle bay mostly untouched and glossy.

Overall I am pleased with the final product and even got a compliment from my wife - which I felt was quite an achievement.
