Space Station K-7

By Mike Walston

The late, great SF artist Robert McCall did paitings of hovering domed cities ("Desert Nocturne" - 1977 & "Argosy" - 1981) and at least one domed space station from a 1976 piece that I think was called "Centaurus Station." I've always wanted to tackle a similar idea with a scratchbuild.

I built most of  AMT/Round 2's repop of the K-7 Space Station straight from the box. The three outboard tower windows were lit with LEDs. I replaced the kit's top central tower with plastic tubing to connect it  to a new multi-tiered domed city; a "refit" which makes this "Starbase K-7." This part of the project was made with lots of parts from my spares box; including some buildings from an old Space: 1999 Moonbase Alpha kit, Millennium Falcon landing gear, pen caps, drywall anchors, and a lot of stuff I've got no clue where it came from. The two ring platforms were custom cut from 1/16 inch plastic stock. I fished the lower clear dome section out of the trash a long time ago. The upper dome section was a "display support" my wife found in a new bra she bought! Six more LEDs were added to the city's central tower and surrounding streets.
