USS Intrepid

This is the USS Intrepid, a Newton class starship. Its design is based on one of the starships seen leaving Spacedock in the movie Star Trek. The Intrepid is the flagship of Admiral Leon Nakaga, who commands the Third Fleet from Starbase 15. The ship was launched in 2269 and was originally to be given the name USS Osprey. It was decided that the ship would be re named Intrepid to honour the deaths of the crew of the previous ship. Starbase 15 was situated not far from the Federation border with the Gorn Hegemony and as such the Intrepid had the honour of hosting the first diplomatic meeting between the two sides. While Ambassadors from both sides negotiated for a formal treaty the Intrepid and its Gorn counterpart hung in space for three days, until without warning a Romulan Bird Of Prey de-cloaked over the two ships and began attacking. Due to its slower reaction time the Gorn cruiser took severe damage but was able to return fire. The Intrepid was able to quickly manoeuvre itself as the Romulan ship appeared and only took minor damage to its starboard engineering section It was able to turn rapidly and fire off a fierce volley of torpedo’s, distracting the Romulan ship from its attack on the Gorn. As the Romulans moved in on the Intrepid the Gorn, who though damaged still had weapons capability, where able to directly target the Romulan ship with its disrupters. The Romulan's shields began to buckle and under repeated attack from both the Gorn and the Intrepid the Romulans fled the scene as quickly as they had appeared. While negotiations between the Gorn and the Federation had been going well, the subsequent battle had actually helped the two sides form a deeper appreciation of each other and was a major factor in helping to form a lasting bond between the two sides.
