Enterprise: Self Destruct

By Greg Kirkman

This is Round 2's 1/1000 scale U.S.S. Enterprise Refit model, built to depict the badly damaged ship as seen moments before burning up in the Genesis planet's atmosphere in STAR TREK III: THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK. The model originally started as my second attempt to build the U.S.S. Enterprise, NCC-1701-A, but I just wasn't satisfied with how it was going. I decided to try something different to get some more practice in--which turned out to be a LOT more work!

I acquired an aftermarket 1/1000 destroyed Refit saucer from BHP (which I modified and accurized, partly by adding bits of brass rod and styrene for detail), and Dremeled off the resin saucer's impulse engines, grafting Tetryon's replacement impulse part onto it. This was not an easy task, since it required a lot of filling and sanding, as well as rescribing some of the saucer's gridlines.

I mostly used Acreation Models' aztec pattern decals, with Testors' Classic White as a base color. They look really good and subtly more colorful than the kit's stock aztec decals. I felt bad weathering the model up (with pastels), because a lot of that nice detail was obscured.

JDecals' aftermarket set was used for the existing damage from the battle with Khan (as well as the mysterious extra damage that appeared on the ship in-between films). I spruced the decals up by applying tiny dabs of silver paint to them, which more closely matches the look of the real model (with lots of twisted hull plating and tiny patches)--this gives the decals more depth and visual interest than they would have had (with simple black "burns" covered with dark gray "patches").
