Zombie Apocalypse Bushmaster

By Brian Thewlis

This model came about as part of a Zombie Group build on www.whatifmodelers.com. Having done a couple of other Post Apocalyptic builds, naturally I wanted in. Putting myself in the place of a "survivor" I looked at what would help us survive. Vehicle-wise the thinking was something that was roomy, all-terrain with survivability through armour (as not everything out there that is dangerous is necessarily a Zombie; other groups being the main threat). Gazing at my stash I saw the 1/35 Showcase Models Bushmaster Protected Mobility Vehicle, an Australian-designed and -built military vehicle. A natural choice, as it is basically a Military Armoured MiniBus.

Thinking of how Zombie literature nearly always has the failure of all centralised support and the prospects of "stuff" lying around abandoned, the Bushmaster looked the perfect Zombie Survivor Vehicle, which could be modified to suit the survivors using available tools.

The model started with the interior, as you can see a lot through the large rear door, hatch and windscreen. I removed some of the passenger seats for extra storage and added radio and various bits of kit, all pre painted. Next the top of the vehicle was added, then, everything masked off to protect the interior and transparencies.

Outside it was time to go to town. Of course any Zombie Apocalypse vehicle should have a robust "Zombie Plough" to get through those pesky shambling Z's. Then protection around the wheels to stop them getting all tangled up in there, plus a Z proof Windscreen mesh screen. Of course every bit of kit you have, extra fuel, supplies all has to be carried, so a heap of stores, even a gas bottle, is added to the roof and sides of the vehicle. A scratch built Flamethrower with pressure system also added, plus added a cobbled together ratchet tie down.

Painting was done by fading off the normal colours with a bit of ivory then further oversprays with a very thin grey to further fade and blend together. Normal chipping, wear using sponge methods.
