Darkness from Legend

This is a bust of the character Darkness, played by Tim Curry in the 1985 movie "Legend". I picked up this Geometric Design kit at Wonderfest because I've always wanted it, but I didn't think it was produced any longer.

The resin was full of bubbles, especially in the horns. In places it looked like foam. I tried filling and sanding, filling and sanding, but it kept exposing new bubbles. Finally I used a Dremel to grind the resin completely away, about 1/8" deep or deeper, and resurfaced the area with Aves Apoxie. Considering the organic, curved shape of the horns, this wasn't hard. There were a few bubbles in the figure's shoulders and back of the head, but these were filled the conventional way.

A few coats of Mr. Surfacer were used to fill and smooth scratches and surface imperfections. After this was sanded smooth, a final thin primer coat was given, then the figure was painted with Tamiya acrylics. A mixture of red and brown was used to preshade the recesses, under the chin, ears, and so forth. Then several light coats of red were airbrushed, mixed progressively with yellow for highlights. Eyes, teeth, and mouth were painted by hand. The horns were painted straight gloss black, and given several coats of Future with a wide, flat brush. The body was airbrushed with two or three coats of semi-gloss lacquer.

The base came from Jimmy Flintstone. I stuck in a brass rod for mounting, and sculpted on some weird tendril-like nonsense that really look like crap. The entire base was hand painted with oils, and mounted to a wooden plaque. Some day I'd like to repaint the horns, to get a really smooth, glossy, organic look. In these pictures, taken just days after the project was finished, you can really see dust motes and cat hair stuck to the horns. It isn't stuck in the paint, it is just really static-y.
