USS Mercy and USS Dirac

By Chris St. John

USS Mercy, NCC-52831, Hope-class and USS Dirac, NCC-92576, Soong-class. A medical ship and a science ship, respectively. Obviously, they were patterned on the Oberth-class design; it seemed efficient. The Hope-class is named after the original designation for the Pasteur in "All Good Things..." & the Soong-class...well..yeah. Noonien Soong. I had intended the Soongs to be a follow-on to the ancient Oberths, but then, this was way before knowing of the Nova-class.

Mercy's saucer came from half of an aircraft landing wheel, while Dirac's is actually the deflector dish from the 1/1600 Constitution from the "Space Ship Set." The "shelf" on both, as well as the pylons for both ships were made from sheet styrene, and the lower "cylinders" on both were fashioned from 1/72-scale bombs; Mercy's nacelles were built from layered sheet styrene and Dirac's from 1/72-scale missiles.
