USS Enterprise NCC-1701

By Alan Nadel

Yes, this Enterprise is from ERTL's venerable kit #6676. The only parts that weren't reworked or replaced are the control reactors on the inboard engine slots. The sensor dish and the saucer top half are from an older version of the kit (pre-1970). The warp domes are a three layered vacuform, each with a single amber railroad bulb, and an inner dome painted in a fan pattern with Tamiya acrylic Clear Red. The upper saucer dome and the rear engine domes are also vacuformed. The lower sensor dome, aft navigation beacon and three-ringed nav sensor are all plexiglass rod (3/4", 1/4" and 1 1/4", respectively) turned on a lathe.

The Enterprise was painted with a 4:1 mix of Tamiya White and Light Sea Grey, which closely matches a color chip of paint used in the 1992 restoration of the original model. Grey parts are 100% Light Sea Grey. The nav sensor is Copper. My Enterprise has grid lines - drawn in lightly with a drafting pencil. They're barely visible in the photos.

Only the red Starfleet pennants came form the kit. The 'USS Enterprise' and 'NCC-1701' markings came from the Decalex sheet. Other markings were airbrushed onto clear decal film. After decalling, the model was weathered and highlighted with various shades of grey, blue, red and brown.

Windows are from Woodland Scenics dry transfer stripes applied to clear decal film. This technique makes it easier to position the markings. Breaking my drive for maximum accuracy, I detailed the port side of the ship using my imagination.

The model's display stand holds four "C" cell batteries for its six volt system, and has a jack in the rear for a 6VDC adapter.
